Southampton Club info

Southampton was formed in 1885 by the members of the St. Mary’s Church. The church-based roots are still a big part of the club’s identity, as evidenced by their most popular nickname: The Saints. Being one of the founding members of the Premier League, they have spent the majority of their history in the top flight since their first promotion to it in 1966; their longest continuous period was for 27 seasons between 1978 and 2005.

After setbacks and financial problems the club spent 2005 to 2012 outside of the Premier League. Southampton finally returned to the league under Nigel Adkins in the 2012/13 season, he was later replaced by Mauricio Pochettino who achieved some great results as manager.

Southampton Rivalry

Southampton’s most well known rival is Portsmouth FC, the fixture is also known as the South Coast Derby. Unfortunately the two teams often play in different divisions, so the derby game has only been played 71 times in the “First Class” competition, with Southampton gaining the most wins.

Southampton Stadium

St Mary’s Stadium has been home to the Saints since August 2001. It has a capacity of 32,689 and is one of only a handful of stadiums in Europe to meet UEFA’s Four Star criteria. The stadium has also been host to a number of international games. The home stadium before St Mary’s was the Dell, this iconic stadium had been the home of the saints for 103 years!

The first match at St Mary’s Stadium was played against RCD Espanyol, with the Spanish side winning 4–3.
