Societá Sportiva Calcio Napoli, also known as SCC Napoli, is one of Italy’s biggest football clubs playing in Serie A. The club has a rich history of highs and lows. The late 1980s saw the biggest successes in the club’s history with Argentine star player Diego Maradona. Two national championships, the UEFA Cup and the Coppa Italia were won by the club from Naples. A low point in the club’s history is its bankruptcy in 2004. The well-known AS Napoli disappeared to Serie C and was forced to continue under the name SSC Napoli. In the 2007/2008 season, the club returned to Serie A.

Derby del Sole – Derby of the Sun
It is one of Italy’s oldest football rivalries, dating back to the late 1920s. On 8 April 1928, superpowers Roma and Napoli face each other for the first time. Roma wins convincingly 4-1. The biggest defeat in this derby is in Napoli’s name. On 29 March 1959, ‘Gli Azzurri’ lose by a whopping 8-0 to Roma.

The stadium of SSC Napoli

This club from Naples, Italy, plays its matches at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The stadium has had several names in its history. The stadium, with a capacity of 87,000 supporters, was first opened in 1959 under the name Stadio del Sole. Barely four years later, the stadium continued under the name Stadio San Paolo in 1963. After a major renovation in 2019, the stadium today has a capacity of 54,276 supporters. On 25 November 2020, the club was rocked by the death of their Argentine superstar Diego Armando Maradona. As a tribute, the stadium was then renamed the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on 4 December 2020.
