Caja Magica

Caja Magica is a sports complex located on the banks of the Manzanares in Madrid. The sports complex has three lanes. The main stadium has a total capacity of over 12,000 spectators. This makes it one of the larger stadiums on the ATP calendar. The other two stadiums can accommodate 3500 and 2500 spectators respectively. All three stadiums have a sliding roof, making it possible to play whatever the weather.

HISTORY

Madrid Open was organised for the first time in 2002. From 2002 to 2008 it was an indoor hardcourt tournament for men only. With the opening of the Caja Magica sports complex in 2009, the Madrid Open became a gravel tournament for both men and women.

In 2012 the tournament was played on blue gravel instead of red gravel. However, this was not a success and due to the criticism of many top players, this was changed back to red clay in 2013.

PREVIOUS RESULTS

Roger Federer is the only tennis player to have won Madrid Open on all three different surfaces (hard court, red clay and blue clay).

Rafael Nadal holds the most singles titles. He has won the ATP Madrid Open five times. In the women’s side, it is Czech Petra Kvitová with three titles. The most notable winner in this list is Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old Spaniard won his second ATP 1000 tournament in his career at the expense of Alexander Zverev.
