Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent or KAA Gent is a professional football club from Ghent that plays in the first division A. KAA Gent was founded as the football section of the Association Athlétique La Gantoise (AAG) on 31st October 1900.

In 1964, 1984 and 2010 the club won the Cup of Belgium and in 2015 became Belgian national champions for the first time. The club then also won its first Belgian Supercup. KAA Gent became national champions for the first time in its 115-year history and qualified directly for the group stage of the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League.

On Sunday 24th May 2015, KAA Gent was greeted by 125,000 supporters in a celebrating city. The biggest supporters’ party in the history of Belgian football was made a reality. The team of KAA Gent is also known as ‘The Buffalos’. The term was coined after the original Buffalo Bill and his Wild West circus visited the city in the early 20th century.

Rivals of KAA Gent

KAA Gent has a fierce rivalry with Club Brugge. This match is popularly known as the “Battle of Flanders”, as it is between the two cultural capitals of Flanders. There are also many Club Brugge supporters in the city of Ghent due to internal migration from West Flanders to the city, as well as in the rest of Flanders, while KAA Gent is proud of its local identity.

The stadium of KAA Gent

The Ghelamco Arena, or the Arteveldestadion, is the current stadium of KAA Gent. On 31st May 2013 the official name of the current stadium was announced. This new stadium in Ghent is now generally known to the public as the Arteveldestadion. The Ghelamco Arena refers to the developer of the construction project. The modern stadium with several lounges can hold about 20,000 supporters. There are plenty of parking places for these supporters, and there is a circular walkway under the stands with cafés and restaurants.
